Ceramic Coating vs PPF: Which Protection Does Your Car Need?

Catch us on the gram

@pimpmycar_aus

Ceramic coating and paint protection film get lumped together as "paint protection", so people assume they are choosing between two versions of the same thing. They are not. They protect against completely different threats, and knowing which is which makes the decision easy.

Ceramic is a chemical shield

A ceramic coating is a thin liquid-glass layer that bonds to your paint. It fights the chemical and light attacks: UV fade, fallout, bird mess, water spots and grime. It makes the surface glossy and hydrophobic, so dirt slides off and washing is quick.

What it will not do is stop a stone chip or a car-park scratch. It is a shield against the stuff that dulls and stains paint, not the stuff that gouges it.

PPF is physical armour

Paint protection film is a thick, self-healing urethane that takes the physical hits: stone chips, scratches, road rash and light scuffs all stop at the film. It is the only thing on this list that actually stops a chip reaching your paint.

It is dearer than a coating, and most people run it on the high-impact front end rather than the whole car. Where a coating covers everything thinly, PPF covers the danger zones thickly.

The answer is often both

The classic combo is PPF on the front end to stop the chips, and a ceramic coating over the whole car, film included, for gloss and easy washing everywhere. Chip protection where it is hit, slickness and shine everywhere else.

Tell us your car, how you drive it and your budget, and we will tell you whether it is ceramic, PPF, or the pair, no upsell, just what suits the car.
